OUR BARNHISEL LINE OF ANCESTORS

When I began my family research c. 1985, I knew only one great grandparent, Mary Ann Wilderson. I soon learned that her mother's maiden name was Rachel Barnhisel, the last name on our Barnhisel descendancy list below. I had the mistaken idea that Barnhisel was a very unusual name and that it would be a difficult name to find records for. When I visited my local Family History Center to begin my study of the Barnhisel surname, one of the volunteers heard me speak the name, Barnhisel, and said that John Milton Bernhisel was an important figure in the Mormon Church history. John was a good friend of the founder of the church, Joseph Smith, and was elected to be the church's representative in the United States Congress c. 1850s. You can imagine my surprise and pride in my "cousin" Bernhisel! From that point on, I found out that unusual names are the easiest kinds of names to find for the simple reason that there are fewer to find. Compare these kinds of names to having names like Smith, Jones, or Johnson to search for, for instance.

At the top of our Barnhisel list below, is the man who begins this surname. Hans Bernhard Hausele who was a butcher in Bad Kreuznach, Germany. According to Hans, he was not allowed to reveal his birthplace, former residence, or family background. These were the rules of the Butcher's Guild of which he was a member. It seems that eventually two of his names became combined, leaving out the "hard" part=Bernhausele. As I have mentioned many times, the spelling of surnames changed often, due to lack of education and various other reasons. So our list of Barnhisels reflects some of those changes.

Hausele, Hans Bernhard born aft. 1610, lived in Kreuznach, Germany d. 1670 Germ.
Bernthausel, Johann Martin 1651-1726 in Kreuznach, Rheinland, Germany
Bernthausel, Johann Valentin 1699 in Kreuznach; emigrated to PA; d. 1764 in Albany, PA
Bernthausel, Johann Martin 1729 in Klein-Neidesham, Germ; d. 1802 in Tyrone, PA
Barnhisel, Henry Adam 1776 in Albany, Berks, PA; d. 1824 in Girard, Trumbull, OH
Barnhisel, Martin 1799 in Tyrone, PA; d. 1875 in Wethersfield, Trumbull, OH
Barnhisel, Rachel 1823 in Wethersfield, Trumbull, OH; d. 1908 in Newton, OH

THE MACKEY LINE OF DESCENT

Our Mackey ancestry has been traced back to the birth of Jonathan Mackey who was born in the County Down of Ireland in 1615. Here is his list of descendants and their places of birth:

I. Johnathan Mackey  b.1615 County Down, Ireland
II. John Mackey unknown birth information
III. William Mackey  b. 1712   Inverness, Scotland
IV. Robert Mackey       b. 1750                     Maryland
V. William Mackey     b. 1803   Welsh Run, Franklin, PA
VI. James Mackey       b. 1830   Welsh Run, Franklin, PA
VII. Thomas Mackey   b. 1852   Galion, Crawford, OH
VIII. Guy Mackey        b. 1875   Galion, Crawford, OH
IX. Robert Mackey  b. 1908   New York City, NY, NY
X. Phillip Mackey        b. 1943   Akron, Summit, OH
XI. Gabriel Mackey b. 1988   Westerville, Franklin, OH

Most Irish and Scottish genealogists are in agreement that the
words Mackay, Mackie, Mackey, etc. are Anglicization's of

MacAoidh or son of Aoidh. The proper pronunciation sounds like

eye or "McEye". When I began researching our ancestors in Galion,

Ohio the census takers had written our surname as McKey and

other variable ways of spelling the name. The prefix "Mac" means

 "son of ".

We also know that many Scotland people were sent to Ireland in the 1600s, our people among them. These people were called Scots-Irish by their neighbors in America, because of where they emigrated from in the 1700s. The "Scots-Irish" would have preferred to be called Scots or Scotch. They remained true to their Scottish upbringing even though they lived in Ireland for about a century. I am proud of my Scotch heritage!

The John and Judith (Dillingham) Shatswell Family

These ninth great grandparents from England are my last Mackey Family ancestors that I will tell you about, as I explained in an earlier post last month.  I will keep this blog page available for me to post stories about other collateral relatives and some other kinds of  genealogical material that I'll want to share with you occasionally.

John and Judith were both born in Ipswich, Essex, England and were married c. 1597 there. Here is the list of their children:

1597 John
1600 Elizabeth
1601 Sybil
1602 Richard
1605 Mary
1608 Theophilus
1609 Curwin
1612 William
1613 Margaret, our ancestor
1614 Judith

Neptune Marina Quay, Ipswich

During the 14th to 17th centuries Ipswich was a kontor for the Hanseatic League, the port being used for imports and exports to the Baltic. In the time of Queen Mary the Ipswich Martyrs were burnt at the stake on the Cornhill for their Protestant beliefs. A monument commemorating this event now stands in Christchurch Park. From 1611 to 1634 Ipswich was a major center for emigration to New England.

JOHN SHATSWELL
BORN: abt 1574 in Ipswich, Essex, England
DIED: Unknown

JUDITH DILLINGHAM
BORN: 1578 in Ipswich, Essex, England
DIED: abt 1617 in Sibbertoft, Northamptonshire, England
SOURCES: In an article by David A. Macdonald titled "A new look at the Corwin and Shatswell Families" in the Register (NEHGR) 150:180 (Ap r 1996). Discusses a Chancery court proceeding in 1627 against the administrator of the estate of widow Judith Shatswell of Sibbertoft, Northhamptonshire, England, who had died more than a decade earlier. There is reference to "two of ye uncles and neere kinsemen". So it looks like we can say that Mary (Shatswell) (Webster) Emery was from Sibbertoft, and her mother was named Judith; DEATH:The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, The New England Historic Genealogical Society; GENERAL:Pedigree Resource File CD 4, Pedigree Resource File CD 4, (Salt Lake City, UT: Intellectual Reserve, Inc., 1999) !GENERAL:Pedigree Resource File CD 3, Pedigree Resource File CD 3, (Salt Lake City, UT: Intellectual Reserve, Inc., 1999) !GENERAL:Ancestral File (TM), Ancestral File (TM), The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, June 1998 (c), data as of 5 JAN 1998 Repository: Family History Library 35 N West Temple Street, Salt Lake City, UT 84150 USA !GENERAL:Pedigree Resource File CD 5, Pedigree Resource File CD 5, (Salt Lake City, UT: Intellectual Reserve, Inc., 1999) !GENERAL:Ancestral File (TM), Ancestral File (TM), The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, June 1998 (c), data as of 5 JAN 1998 Repository: Family History Library 35 N West Temple Street, Salt Lake City, UT 84150 USA !GENERAL:The New England Historical and Genealogic al Register, The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, The New England Historic Genealogical Society;Ancestry Family Tree; Essex County, Massachusetts Probate Records Supplement, 1644 - 1691; Ref: LDS Archive Family Group Sheet
