Morris was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania in December of 1777. He moved to Washington, Maryland where he was a general farmer. In 1800, he married Sarah Rose. Their two sons were born in Maryland.

In 1806, after moving to Ohio, they had a daughter, Rachel, who died very young. In 1808,  another daughter, also named Rachel, was born. Unfortunately, however, Morris died before Rachel's birth.
